Serving up Summer – Here’s to Herne Bay Tennis Club

Herne Bay Tennis Club has been serving up good times on the courts for 130 years as the thriving friendly club was established way back in 1891, they’ve moved about since then and now have a state-of-the-art club to call home.

“The Hub” as it is known is a wonderfully equipped place to rally where you can enjoy 6 all weather, floodlit courts with a MatchPlay 2 surface as well as their own state of the art clubhouse. The Sports Hub shares a Pavilion with showers and changing facilities, a bar and viewing terraces upstairs. The club is naturally proud of its home which is testament to the commitment and endeavour of the club members.

On October 19th of that most unfortunate year 2020, the club finally after years of hard work popped a bottle of bubbly on their brand-new courts, and toasted “Quinn Estates, Anne Gibbs, Graham Miles and Alex Kazakeos for their fantastic efforts and dedication”. That celebratory mood lasted all of twelve days before the lockdown was reinstated and that winter of woe took hold. The club now of course is safe to open and the weather is finally serving up something that resembles summer so it all looks set to be an ace season of tennis.

The end of June marks a significant anniversary for this community asset as the club’s first recorded inter-club match was played on 27th June 1898! 133 years later the club is still competing and on a much larger scale, running over twenty teams in three leagues throughout Kent. CommunityAd caught up with Chairman Isobel Warnock who wanted to pass the following message on to our readers:

“Well, what a year this has been but at last in October 2020 we moved to the fabulous new facilities at Herne Bay Sports Hub built and provided by Quinn Estates. Members are loving the new surface and all the space we have for having a chat after we play!

After all the lockdowns and restrictions of the last year we are now fully open for members to enjoy great facilities including 6 all-weather floodlit courts. We are a members club and welcoming new members, both as beginners, returners and more experienced players adults and juniors alike.

Tennis is a great way to exercise, have fun and meet new friends. If you are a beginner or returner to the sport, we are running a group for coaching at this level. If you have a competitive spirit then tennis may be the sport for you! We run over 20 teams in Kent and local leagues throughout the summer and winter seasons. We have coaching for kids after school and on Saturday mornings. Places are limited and must be booked, refer to the website!

Our coaches are planning the summer holiday camps for juniors and we will also be running the LTA Youth Start scheme.”
