Fundraising for Yateley Swimming Club for Disabled

Catering for young and old alike, Yateley Swimming Club for Disabled acts as a lifeline for many local residents with visible and non-visible disabilities.

The Swimming Club has been running for over 30 years and was started by a wonderful lady called Joyce Fisher, who still runs the club today.

The Swimming Club are having to raise funds for a new hoist, which has to be replaced now every seven years, and without the hoist there would be a number of members that would not be able to attend as they rely on it to get in and out of the pool.

In order to replace the hoist in September, the club need to raise between £5,000 and £6,000, with most members of the group helping to raise funds with a sponsored swim.

We caught up two members from the club, Mickey Coy and Julie Read, who have set up individual fundraisers to help raise some much needed funds for Yateley Swimming Club for Disabled.

Mickey, who has set up a GoFundMe and raised £150 explained: “The reason I started the GoFundMe page was to help with raising funds for a local club on the brink of closing. Especially when this club has helped so many people over 30 years including myself and my stepson, who has Autism and ADHD, learn to swim in a safe and friendly environment.”

Julie, who has taken on a swimming challenge to aid a separate fundraiser on JustGiving, has been swimming with the group for six years now since she has a total knee replacement. “They welcomed me to the group and have always been very accommodating. But now, the hoist is up for renewal and we need to get fundraising to replace it.”

Julie has been swimming three or four times a week at Places Leisure, Camberley, and will be finishing the last 40 lengths at Yateley Swimming Club for Disabled on 14th April.

The hoist makes it possible for a wide array of people to enjoy swimming who might have previously been unable to take part.
