Fleet teacher’s 10 marathons in 10 days

A local school teaching assistant has powered through 10 marathons in 10 days, to not only raise money for a Farnborough primary school, but also purely for the thrill of the challenge.

We caught up with teaching assistant John Kennedy, 64, who has worked at Tower Hill Primary School since 2017 and has recently set up a fundraiser for the school celebrating his incredible feat of running 10 marathons in 10 days.

The idea behind the fundraiser is to help the school transform an unused courtyard into a beautiful outdoor learning resource which will help the pupils’ mental well-being and their progress in all subjects, with all years, from Year R to 6, being able to use the area.

Speaking to us about his motivation behind the fundraiser and his mind-boggling achievement of 10 marathons in 10 days, Mr Kennedy told us: “I’ve worked at Tower Hill since September 2017 and the school is a true community school and the children are incredible; it’s the most rewarding job I have ever had.

“The marathons were all at Walton on Thames,” explains John. “They were 8 laps along the Thames path, sometimes east sometimes west, with an average time of 4 hours 37 minutes.

“Running is a very important part of my life – I ran my first half marathon in 1983, my first marathon in 1990 (London), second in 1991 (London again) then loads of half marathons until 2007 when I ran my third marathon (New York) and I have now run 134 including all 6 majors.

“[The school] are renovating the courtyard to provide a quiet calm learning zone that we know helps some children learn. I have previously raised over £7000 for the school from running events which included a run around the field for 183.4 laps to celebrate my 100th marathon which the children joined in for various distances – it was a great day!

“We also had a London marathon day last year when an Olympian and BBC South Today and Sky TV visited us. I am just incredibly grateful to all that helped me and donated to my fundraiser and I know the school is too.”
