Faversham’s very own – Curb Pilot

Exploring the local band circuit will open your ears and eyes to some of the incredibly talented musicians that reside in our neck of the woods; just like that of 5-piece band Curb Pilot.

Famed for their Reggae, Ska and Two Tone, Curb Pilot perform mainly covers from the likes of legendary acts such as The Specials, Madness, UN40, Bob Marley, Dexys, and The Beat to name but just a few.

We caught up with Mike Harmsworth from the band who fronts Keyboards & Trombone to find a little bit more about the band who he fronts alongside Sean Pout (vocals), Phil Holmes (saxophone), Scott Field (drums) and Adam King (bass guitar).

Formed in 2013, Curb Pilot came together when Mike and Scott were discussing their love for the Two Tone & Reggae music they used to listen to at school, going back as classmates at Ethelbert Road Primary School.

Talking about some of his early inspirations, Mike explains: “I come from quite a musical family, my dad being an excellent drummer who played in a function band with my uncle, I was taken along at an early age to his gigs.

“My greatest inspirations are Jon Lord for his amazing and inspiring Hammond Organ, Rico Rodriguez, a trombonist on many reggae and specials tracks, and Steve Jones the powerhouse driving the Sex Pistols.

“I have played in bands for 40 years everything from brass bands to heavy metal, I still love the magic when different personalities come together to make a collective sound; it really is a sum of the parts, I never tire of it.”

What would be your 3 Desert Island Discs?

“What’s Going On by Marvin Gaye, a proper 70s concept album still relevant today that tackles environmental issues, poverty and race relations; musically it’s a masterpiece. Sex Pistols – Never Mind the Bollocks, and Upstairs at Eric’s by Yazoo, simple but perfect synth programming by Vince Clarke combined with Alison Moyet’s soulful voice.”

Curb Pilots have supported The Selector, The Beat and Bad Manners, and have also played at various Ska & Mod festivals as well as headlining their own shows; with the most popular local venue being at Alexander Centre where they also invite well known bands to join them and put on a performance to remember.
