EVELYND bears to remember in Sandwich

As a way of remembering her mother who recently passed away, Sandwich resident Sharon Walker has reimagined one of her mother’s favourite jumpers into cherished memory bears and dogs, sparking EVELYND bears to remember.

Sharon Walker is a local Sandwich resident who has been travelling around the world as part of her career as a Tour Manager for the past 25 years; working in the likes of Spain, Italy, Cyprus, Dubai, Russia, Cuba, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Beirut and Lebanon, to name but a few.

Speaking to CommunityAd, Sharon expands on the emotional reason behind the memory bears telling us: “Sadly, I lost my mum last December and had a favourite jumper of hers, I wanted something to remember her by forever, so I made a memory bear out of it, and I made memory bears and dogs for all the family.

“I wanted to do something in memory of my mum, so I started EVELYND bears to remember for my mum and it’s her name plus my dad’s initial.”

A memory bear, as explained by Sharon herself, is “a bear to remember a loved one, made from clothes, a throw, a blanket or a favourite piece of clothing that used to be a loved one’s. They are usually to remember someone that has passed away but can be made for special occasions, holy communions, baby showers, anything really.”

Can you talk to us about the process of turning a cherished piece of clothing into a memory bear?

“The process of making a bear starts as soon as I see the garment I have to work with: once I see the fabric, the bear comes alive, sometimes if the garment has a nice logo or label, I will incorporate this onto the bear.

“I cut the pieces out and join them together and embroider its face on, put the arms and legs on making the bear fully jointed.

“It can be any piece of clothing/throw but if it’s a very heavy fabric it’s not suitable, so fleeces, shirts and jumpers are good. I’ve turned football shirts into bears, and I’ve turned waistcoats into a dog. What fabric is used for the bear decides the size of the bear, as if it’s very stretchy when you stuff the bear, it comes out bigger.

“The feedback has been amazing, one comment left said: ‘Thank you so much for the bear, it was a surprise for my daughter and we had tears and the bow tie you put on it was a lovely touch as my husband used to wear a bow tie at weekends’.”
