Emma Brown does Faversham proud at Deaflympics

Faversham’s own Emma Brown recently captained the GB Deaf Women’s Futsal team as they competed in the 2024 Winter Deaflympics this March.

With no funding from UK Sport or the Government, Emma created a GoFundMe page at the start of the year raising an impressive £2,300 to help support and contribute towards her journey of representing Great Britain at the Winter Deaflympics.

Taking place in Erzurum, Turkey, Emma was looking to take GB to a gold medal having already been crowned European Deaf Futsal Champions in 2022 and achieving a bronze medal at last year’s Futsal World Championships in Brazil.

Despite not coming away with the gold, GB topped their group in impressive fashion beating hosts Turkey 11-1, Poland 6-4 and drawing 5-5 with Germany. Great Britain would sadly endure semi-final heartbreak at the hands of Brazil, losing 4-1 and in the 3rd place playoff, GB suffered an agonizingly close 4-3 defeat to Germany.

UK Deaf Sport also have the Fair Play for Deaf Athletes Campaign which aims to highlight the discrimination and lack of funding for deaf athletes. They are campaigning for the Government to support deaf athletes as they do their Para and Olympic counterparts.
