Dive behind the scenes with Maidstone Aquatics

At CommunityAd, we are staunch animal lovers and we thought it would be fascinating to delve into the world of pet store owners and some of their wondrous animals, such as Maidstone Aquatics.

CommunityAd Exclusive - Dive behind the scenes with Maidstone AquaticsIn this edition, we caught up with husband and wife team, Wayne and Jo Miles, who have been happily married for over 30 years, with a daughter and a passion for pets. The duo, who have two dogs, lots of domestic birds and fish at home, currently run Maidstone Aquatics and Warburtons Pet and Garden Centre.

The passion for animals have always been present for the pair, and they turned their love for animals into a job by buying their first shop and becoming business owners, whilst showing customers how to look after their pets and get the most enjoyment from them.

Maidstone Aquatics is home to 7-10 different species of reptiles including snakes, geckos and tortoises for example, a few thousand Coldwater, Tropic and Pond fish, a fabulous Malawi species section, 20 canaries, 20 budgies, 20 finches, a wide range of arachnids, some new exciting Hermit crabs, and some marvellous tropical exotic animals.

Speaking to us, Jo delved into some of the wonderful animals and facts that fascinate her: “We have ‘Chunks’ a shop Bearded Dragon who absolutely loves meeting everyone, plus a magnificent shop Yemen Chameleon who greets people as they come into the shop! Our Budgies are cute with a lovely sound, although the Canaries like to show off being the better singers.

“We love looking into our Japanese Koi Ponds as it’s so peaceful watching them swim so gracefully around. Our other ‘favourite species’ is the lovely young men who work for us in the shop – they are always very good humoured and knowledgeable and make us good cups of tea.

“Chameleon cannot change the colour of their skin to ‘any background’, they can only change it to green or brown or ‘foliage’ colours, not purple like the TV adverts.

“Swordtails – Tropical Live Bearer Fish give birth to live babies, also the female Swordtail can change her sex to a male!

“‘Nemo’ from ‘Finding Nemo’ is a Clown Fish and you can come and see one in our Marine Home Tank!”

The team take great pride in the cleanliness and health of all the animals, and perform health checks in the first instance on opening the store, feed them and report all findings to the directors.

If you have any questions about how to properly care for your pets, the store provide lots of knowledge to their customers and work very hard with their suppliers every day and are constantly aware of the changing needs of the animals.
