Detling Community Store awarded Kent Food Retailer of the Year

The Taste of Kent Awards is one of the county’s most sought after awards, and our local Detling Community Store picked up the prestigious award of Kent Food Retailer of the Year.

Facing off against the likes of Macknade in Faversham and Lower Ladysden Farm in Goudhurst was enough for the Detling Community Store to be brimming with pride, but being announced winners was the icing on the cake for these hard-working members of the community.

We caught up with board member for the community store, Tahlia King, who joined the store around a year ago after doing some voluntary marketing to help spread awareness of the store and the wide range of local, refillable and eco-friendly products on offer.

Tahlia spoke to us about receiving the Kent Food Retailer of the Year award explaining: “In terms of the award we wanted to put the store forward because we wanted to showcase the shop as it’s basically a container on a school playing field; it doesn’t have any bells and whistles, it’s simple, but it was set up for the good of the community. We adhere to our green principles and have a focus on sustainability. We have a lot of dried goods that go into old school paper bags, we have a lot of refillables that are eco-friendly.

“Everything we do revolves around being green and focusing on local products, from alcohol and local fruit and veg, to chocolates and a lot more locally sourced produce, so we thought it might put us in a good standing to enter the Taste of Kent Awards.

“To be shortlisted against people like Macknade and Lower Ladysden Farm was amazing, we were so pleased and to have won was incredible. We did get some feedback as to one of the reasons we won, it was down to when the mystery shopper came round they were pleased with our knowledge of all the local products, where the produce is coming from and who we buy from, and that’s what they said kind of gave us the edge.

“The store is run primarily by volunteers, with just a couple of permanent staff, so we are very proud of the fact we won the Taste of Kent Award and think it’s a huge achievement for everyone involved and we are still riding quite high off it!”

Why not pop down and explore the wide range of local and refillable products available today?

The store are always looking for more volunteers and are grateful for any time you can spare to help out. To get in touch contact the store at [email protected] or ring 01622 631305.
