Deborah Heath Wildlife

Deborah Heath has an eye so keen and precise it could rival that of some of her subjects.

Unlike our feathered friends she’s not on the hunt for prey but the perfect photo, though, of which she has many. CommunityAd had the pleasure of a quick chat about her photography and the local wildlife.

So, Deborah, what a year you’ve had in the Test Valley? What wildlife moments stand out for you?

It’s been a really tough year for everyone, but I think the wildlife has benefitted from the reduction in pollution/interference from humans! I have been extremely lucky to be able to continue with my photography throughout the year and there’s always something to photograph (even if it’s just my faithful Labrador!) This year I was particularly pleased to be able to photograph Badgers for the first time; gaining an insight into their family life was very special.

I am especially fond of deer and have enjoyed following certain individuals through the seasons – this year I was able to photograph a pair of Roe kids and one of my favourite pictures was taken during the Roe deer Rut (when the Roe deer mate.) A fabulous Roe buck came walking through a barley field up to within 30 metres of me. Another first this year was being able to photograph a family of Water Vole – they live all along the River Test – proving what a rich and diverse environment we have here. Even butterflies can provide pleasure – the Painted Lady (pictured) migrates all the way from South Africa every summer.

You’ve produced another quality calendar; why should readers consider purchasing one?

My calendars highlight the fabulously diverse wildlife we have right here on our doorstep which few people are lucky enough to be able to see. They make great Christmas presents (or gifts for any other occasion!) and they show off what a beautiful part of the countryside we live in. My Wildlife calendars contain 12 beautiful colour A4 images and are still only £8.00 (£10.00 incl p&p) I also support the Hart Wildlife Charity, whose roots are here in Overton. The calendars, along with Greetings cards, Christmas cards and Canvases, can be purchased through my website, through Facebook @testvalleywildlife, in The Wessex Business Hub (21 High St, Overton) and the Overton Market.

You’ve clearly got a passion for this area of the world, what would you say to encourage readers to get out and explore locally?

Walking out in the country is a complete tonic; whether the sun is shining or the rain is falling, the closer you get to nature, the better you feel. Learn some of the tunes the birds sing and you will enjoy identifying them whilst out on your walks. If you spot a butterfly you don’t recognise, try to remember what it looked like and research it. It’s amazing how much you can learn from just looking and listening to the wildlife.
