CrossFit Braintree raise thousands for fundraiser

By bringing together almost 100 CrossFit Braintree members, the local fitness centre has managed to raise over £3,000 for a local girl’s fundraiser.

The money was raised to support Florentina Burton, a Braintree youngster who at just three years of age was diagnosed with high-risk neuroblastoma, a rare and aggressive childhood cancer that has a 50-60% chance of long-term survival, but also carries a high risk of relapse.

Florentina’s family are fundraising further treatment to receive the Bivalent Vaccine in New York for high-risk neuroblastoma that’s not currently available in the UK and have raised over £152,000 of their £250,000 goal.

Speaking to us at CommunityAd, CrossFit Braintree owner Gavin Poulter explains his motivation behind the fundraiser and gives thanks to everyone who supported the team involved:

“We’ve wanted to do something for a charity for a while, my sister-in-law mentioned Florentina – who is a friend of my niece – so we looked into her story and it’s heart-breaking and touching at the same time; just how strong she is. We knew we wanted to do something to help her.

“Possibly the most famous workout is called ‘FRAN’, you usually last around five minutes for an average person. It’s the sort of workout you do once and don’t want to do any others for the rest of the day. You do 21 thrusters, 21 pulls up, then you do 15 thrusters, 15 pulls up and then you do 9 thrusters and 9 pulls up, it’s a pretty brutal exercise with 42.5kg for men and 30kg for women.

“The idea was we were trying to get 100 of our members to do 100 FRAN’s back-to-back, one person goes and then another goes straight after sort of thing. We managed to get almost 100 different people; a couple of our regulars had to do it twice which they didn’t mind.

“We started at 8:30am and didn’t finish until 7:30pm, so we were there for around 11 hours or so, and it wasn’t warm in the slightest.”

The gym also sold raffle tickets and received donations from members, raising over £500 through the raffle alone.

Gav finished by saying: “I would like to thank everyone who took part, if you’re into CrossFit you will know this isn’t an easy workout and one no-one really wants to do, so well done to everyone who came down and thank you to everyone who donated off their own backs and supported us. Florentina is such a brave and special little girl and it was a more than worthy cause to raise money for.”

Well done to all those who got involved with CrossFit Braintree’s incredible and intense fundraising effort! To donate to Florentina’s fundraiser make your way over to the JustGiving page today.
