Community rallies behind Billericay parkrun

At the beginning of September, Billericay parkrun suffered a serious fire in the park’s boathouse which ravaged through their equipment.

Thankfully, no one was hurt, but both Billericay parkrun and Lake Meadows junior parkrun lost everything.

In true community spirit, residents far and wide sprang into action to support both events and organisers were overwhelmed with kind words and generosity.

In Billericay, the two events are Billericay parkrun and Lake Meadows junior parkrun.

Speaking to us at CommunityAd, Volunteer Event Director for Billericay parkrun, David Hayday, explained: “Obviously, everyone was shocked when we heard about the fire and relieved that no one was hurt. Unfortunately, everything that our two events had stored in the boathouse was completely destroyed. This included everything from hi-viz volunteer vests, signs, cones, tables, trolleys, even our event flag!

“When we shared the news on social media, the reaction was simply staggering. Instantly, there was an enormous outpouring of kindness, support and generosity. Much of this came from the local and wider Essex community, but some messages and donations came from much farther afield – even from people who have never visited Billericay and our lovely park. It meant that by the end of that first day we have raised enough funds to replace what was lost.

“Over the days that followed we worked with Basildon Council, parkrun centrally and other locals and then a regular flow of deliveries began to arrive to get us back up and running (and walking, jogging and skipping). In just 12 days Billericay parkrun returned on 16th September and the following day Lake Meadows junior parkrun returned to celebrate its 4th birthday – it really was a fantastic double celebration.

“I can’t tell you how touched the two teams of volunteers have been by the levels of kindness and support shown.”
