Catching up with the Detling Players

Local drama group Detling Players’ production of ‘Allo ‘Allo this November has already sold out!

CommunityAd caught up with the Detling Players’ Janice Kennard to find out more about this wonderful group of enthusiastic amateur thespians…

To readers who may not know, can you explain your own thespian background and your role at The Detling Players?

I have no thespian background at all apart from playing Bassanio in the Merchant of Venice at school.

From your time with The Detling Players what would you say have been your most memorable moments?

Many years ago I got asked if I would take over selling the tickets for the Detling Players productions. Which I did and brought the system up to date with arranging bank transfer facilities rather than cash through my door and delivering paper tickets! After that I got roped into doing the publicity. So now I create, get printed and distribute flyers and posters and banners and programmes for every production. I should add I am totally self-taught and always willing to take advice on design. I have a lovely team of ladies and gents who assist me in the house to house distribution and Derek Lawrence who erects the poster boards and banners and maintains them. He also fabricates the scenery for all the productions from fake pianos to church windows.

CommunityAd Exclusive - Catching up with the Detling PlayersWhat can readers expect from your November production of ‘Allo ‘Allo and how can you purchase tickets?

I think when every single performance of Vicar of Dibley was totally sold out weeks before the production. We were all also so proud when we were invited to take it to perform in Rochester Cathedral where, again, the tickets were totally sold out.

Having seen some of the rehearsals of ‘Allo ‘Allo the audience will be in splits of laughter. We have decided this time to do cabaret style seating with tables decorated in French café style and the audience are being encouraged to dress up a la Francais if they like – which I gather quite a few are. So should be a great atmosphere and lots of fun!

Are you looking for any members and if so, how can interested readers get in touch to find out more?

We are always looking for new blood. In fact, in this next production we have a couple of people who have never performed before and have really taken to it and are superb! Clare Pearce is a new director but seems to be getting the best out of everyone.

For my sins I am also the membership secretary so I am probably the best person for anybody to contact (via [email protected]). It’s only £13 a year or £15 for a family. This gives priority booking, invitations to member’s only events and being able to act in any of the productions.

Do you have any future visions of where you would like The Detling Players to be in the next 10-20 years?

As for the future we are trying to encourage students from local schools to come and get involved in any way they are interested. That could be sound and lighting (Chris Hall our engineer is very professional and knowledgeable), wardrobe (we have a lovely team). Acting, Stage Management etc. We have already had a response of interest from one local school that is very much involved in performing arts.
