Art Birchington Creativity with Matthew Alexander Fine Art

There is a school of thought that artists and creatives can only really flourish in the many studio spaces and galleries of ‘ultra-hip, uber-cool’ Margate. That is nonsense.

The entity of the Isle of Thanet is capable of harbouring creativity, and our beautiful little village is no different. The brilliant Birchington Framing Centre has quickly become the artistic hub for the village. As well as offering an array of products and services at affordable prices the lovely Lorraine and Paul encourage and support local artists of which there is plenty. As well as selling the local artists’ wares in the shop the building doubles up as an exhibition space and a workshop. It’s always worth popping in and seeing which artists are running workshops and what skills you could pick up.

CommunityAd will attempt to meet and interview as many local artists as possible over the next few months, so if you know of or if you are a local artist please don’t hesitate to get in touch: [email protected]

Just outside of Birchington down the road in Sarre we are blessed to have one of Thanet’s most prestigious art galleries owned by internationally acclaimed artist, Matthew Alexander.

“Matthew Alexander Fine Art re-opened at the beginning of December, after a closure due to lockdown of almost two years. Alexander’s Gallery will show a continual exhibition of Matthew’s work with occasional exhibitions of other invited artists.

“To launch the reopening, the gallery is currently showcasing a collection of Matthew’s masterful landscapes which capture the alluring Kent coast and countryside and its open skies. The exhibition features his most recent project ‘In the footsteps of impressionists’, a project where Matthew has re-visited many of the locations where the famous French Impressionists painted over 150 years ago.

“Situated in the heart of the Kent countryside, between Canterbury and Ramsgate, the Architect designed large barn with high ceilings is, in Matthew’s own words, “a fabulous space.”

“During March, we will be exhibiting a collection of Matthew’s father’s work, Christopher Alexander. The exhibition will feature a selection of drawings and paintings. Christopher modestly described himself as a ‘draftsman with a brush’. Many would know Chris from his many years of teaching at Canterbury College and Margate adult education centres.

“Information regarding current and future exhibitions are detailed on the new website. The gallery is open Tuesday to Friday 10am to 3pm and Saturdays 11am to 5pm.

“If you would prefer a more personal experience, during the current pandemic situation, we are able to offer bookable ‘private viewings’ please call the gallery to arrange a convenient time for you to visit and view the exhibition in a safe and distanced way.”
