Birchington Bowls Club recap 2023

2023 has been a great season for Birchington Bowls Club.

It began back in April when one of our members, Paul Proctor, took on the role of the President of Kent. This was a great honour both for Paul and for the Club. Birchington had the pleasure of hosting two of these matches for him. On 23rd May Birchington played ‘The President and Council’ a closely fought game won by Birchington 133 v 125. A lovely fish and chip supper was enjoyed by all after the match. On 17th July Paul led the KCBA President against KCBA Past Presidents. This was a win for the past presidents by 100 – 71. The day was concluded with a three course meal, cooked and served by members of the Club.

You will see by the Club’s new, smart, colourful uniform we are progressing into the twenty-first century!

Two of our lady bowlers Sue Goodchild and Simone Warren have had an amazing season. Their first achievement was to host a quiz night to raise funds for Cancer research which raised over £700. They then completed the ‘Shine ‘ Cancer research, overnight on 23rd September, a 26 mile walk, again raising funds for this fantastic charity. They are still awaiting the final total raised.

As well as being great fundraisers these two ladies are also great bowlers. They won the Kent Over 55 Ladies Pairs, beating the present England Coach and her partner in the process. They went on to represent the County at the National Finals at Leamington Spa and played their way into the last sixteen. An outstanding achievement and one they will remember for a long time.

The weekend of 16th and 17th September was our Club Finals. Trophies were hotly contested and twelve very close matches were played, all in good spirit. It was good to see so many players involved in a whole range of competitions. Our singles champions for this year are Sue Goodchild for the Ladies and Andy Ennis for the Men. Co-incidentally these two players will be taking on the positions as Ladies and Men’s Captain next year. We wish them every success in their new roles.

As a Club we have celebrated many successes on the Green, The Men won the Thanet Combination League title, they reached the Final of the Jubilee Pairs and also Finals Day of the Bernard Annand Trophy. The Ladies were runners-up in the Heron League. In the Catherine Wheeler League the mixed team were the winners, being 33.5 points away from their nearest rivals. We were also third in the East Kent Triples League.
