Bearsted CAN on Green Week

Bearsted is blessed with many a green minded man and a wonderfully eco-woman, in fact we’re a community brimming with people who are empathetic about our environment and our earth.

The aforementioned green folk and many more recently gathered under the umbrella of Green Week.

The first Great Big Green Week took place between 18th – 26th September 2021, and was the largest event for climate and nature ever seen in the UK. Over 5,000 events celebrated how communities are taking action to tackle climate change and protect green spaces, and encouraged others to get involved too.

In 2022, communities came together once more between 24th September and 2nd October, to show how people everywhere are ready and willing to take action to tackle climate change. National organisations, institutions, businesses and media outlets joined in, getting more people involved up and down the country, and putting pressure on the UK Government to up its game on climate change.

Great Big Green Week sees bat walks and bake offs, festivals and football matches, murals and MPs in EVs, seaweed foraging and school assemblies. and everything in between. Events are hosted by teachers, bus drivers, sport clubs, artists, community groups, places of worship, builders – anyone who cares about climate change.

Locally there was plenty on, most crucially though perhaps was the launch of Bearsted’s Repair Café. Local legend Sally Edwards took to Facebook to announce the successful launch:

“Bearsted Climate Action Network successfully ran there 1st Repair Cafe on Saturday! Firstly, a massive THANK YOU to all the Repairers & helpers who gave up their time to come along and help make this such a success.

“Secondly, THANK YOU to those of you who bought something along to be repaired. We had a range of items including bikes, electrical items and sewing.

“Our aim is to STOP our throwaway society and reduce the rubbish that goes into landfill!”
