In 2019, Ashford Borough Council commissioned ‘The Company’ to create a location site-specific multimedia community play celebrating Ashford and its railway connections. The Company interviewed a number of Ashford residents, and past and present railway workers, as part of their research for the production.

The production, scheduled to be performed in May 2020, under the title ‘A Ticket to Ride’, was cancelled as a result of the COVID pandemic. After COVID the project got back on track, with funding from Arts Council England and Ashford Borough Council, and was renamed “All Change for Ashford”. Filmed interviews with residents and railway workers took place, this time looking specifically at the impact of the Pandemic on Ashford and the Railways, and thoughts of what the future would bring.

The sell-out production of “All Change for Ashford” took place in April/May 2022, with over 125 participants taking part including: 4 community choirs, 1 community band, 20 Ashford College students, 6 professional actors and 2 local filmmakers. A film was projected on the wall of the Travelodge Hotel, in Elwick Place, during the finale of the play. The film was shown as part of the AIMREC Festival. It was produced by Modus Films ( and The Company (, with a specially composed soundtrack by Mike and Roger Simmonds.

Copies of the original interviews, and the film, are held by Ashford Borough Museum and can be accessed on a VDU  in the museum during normal opening hours, and will become part of the Museum’s ‘Ashford Peoples’ Library, oral history project.
