A brief history of Wickford Lawn Tennis Club

Although there are no accurate records, it is believed that the Tennis Club was in existence in 1919. However, during the Second World War, no tennis was played.

When the war ended, the club re-formed, thanks to the hard work and enthusiasm of one member, Miss Dora Knapp, who raised money from local shopkeepers.

Since then the tennis club has had its ups and downs, but because of the focus of its current Chairman, Mr Ellis, the club has moved on to being a place where players and their families love to spend time keeping fit and having fun.

We are always looking for new members of all standards, as our coaches, Craig George and Lucas Blakeston, can change a non-player to a Wimbledon champion in no time (so that’s what they say).

We have three state-of-the-art floodlit tennis courts with a clubhouse to the side, and we share our sports ground with Wickford Cricket Club, who provide some top-played cricket and a place to have a drink after tennis and cricket.

Wickford Lawn Tennis Club is the perfect place for families! We offer kids’ tennis lessons for all ages and levels, whether your child is picking up a racket for the first time or ready to take their game to the next level.

We have three modern, floodlit courts, a welcoming clubhouse, and a vibrant atmosphere where families love to spend time. Our experienced coaches, Craig, Lucas, and Tommy, are dedicated to making tennis exciting and accessible for everyone.

Join us at the bottom of Swan Lane – just opposite The Swan Pub – and discover a community where kids thrive, parents relax, and everyone can enjoy the sport of tennis!

Contact Craig for tennis lessons on 07428 775899 or head to www.wickfordlawntennisclub.co.uk.
