Self-taught artists and Lewes residents Becky Wells and Alison Briggs reflect on a year of creating art in lockdown, and their upcoming exhibition “Emerging Connections”:

An internal sense of connection

I think it is fair to say that we have both taken great solace in creating art during this year of lockdown. The year has brought up so many different emotions: fear, sadness, anger and joy, and having an outlet for these when the normal channels were not always available, has been a precious thing. The act of expression through art has helped give both of us a kind of internal sense of connection at a really challenging time.

External connections

We also became increasingly aware of how much we value external relationships with friends, family and others in the community. Alison says ‘I noticed just how many of my drawings seemed to represent a kind of network of connections, with some of them close together and others more distant, but all of them somehow necessary to maintain an equilibrium.’

When restrictions allowed, the two of us met up for walks around Lewes, receiving inspiration and motivation from one another. We also set up Instagram accounts, which proved to be a very supportive space in which to share our art and discover the work of other artists.

Emerging Connections

As we ease out of lockdown, we are excited about the opportunity to share our art in person with the local community! “Emerging Connections” is a free exhibition at the Paddock Studios in Lewes (Sunday 11th July 2021, 10am – 5pm.) It aims to document the experience of moving in and out of varying degrees of connectedness and the use of art as a tool to manage this time. We will also showcase some music and art installation pieces created over this period, a perfect example of another kind of connection that came about this year, between the two genres.

And, last but not least, there will be the optional chance for visitors to connect with one another through contributing to a collaborative post-lockdown artwork (please don’t worry how artistic you feel you are – all contributions welcome!)
