Cycling strategy views sought by Braintree District Council

“We want to see improvements made to the cycle network, in both rural and urban areas, and more people out on their bikes and cycling more often.”

Residents and businesses are being urged to give their views on the actions that should be taken by the council to increase cycling across the district.

Braintree District Council recently unveiled its cycling strategy vision to encourage more people to cycle as part of its commitment to tackling climate change. The council wants to develop a safer and more comprehensive cycle network to encourage more people to cycle and cycle more often. It also wants to make cycling more inclusive.

Before presenting the plans to stakeholders, the council would like the public and interested parties to give their views on its proposals.

People are encouraged to give their views on which of these aspects, if any, will boost the move to more cycling:

·         Improvements to the cycle networks

·         Promotion of cycling and cycling facilities

·         Campaigns to encourage the switch from car to bike, especially for shorter journeys

·         Bike training to give people the skills to cycle with confidence

These views will help shape a plan on how the council will work with partners to leverage support and meet its objectives for its cycling strategy.

Cllr Frankie Ricci, Cabinet Member for Communities at Braintree District Council, said: “We want to see improvements made to the cycle network, in both rural and urban areas, and more people out on their bikes and cycling more often. Our strategy is about connecting places and making cycling accessible and safer for people of all ages to enjoy.  Before we can embark on finalising plans, and engaging with partners, we want to understand what people think of our ideas and how we can prioritise our actions.”

People can give their views at www.braintree.gov.uk/cyclingstrategy. Paper copies are available on request by calling the council’s Customer Service Centre on 01376 552525.

The draft climate change strategy is also out for public engagement. People can give their views on the climate change challenge at www.braintree.gov.uk/climatechange
