Crowd go Bonkers for Variety Show

A local drama group reimagined ‘Alice in Wonderland’ for their annual performance. The group, who all have a learning disability, have spent the past year planning and rehearsing during their weekly sessions at East Kent Mencap’s Swale Resource Centre. Titled ‘Bonkers’, the show blurred the lines between fantasy and reality as the audience were transported on a journey through Wonderland.

The performance took place at Oasis Academy West Site on Friday 8^th December and was enjoyed by many including the Mayor of Swale, Councillor Colin Prescott and Councillor George Bobbin. On the night, Cllr Colin Prescott kindly announced the winners of the raffle.

Featuring a musical mash up of dance routines, choreographed by professional dancer, Michelle Irwin, the show displayed highly skilled moves, alongside singing and acting. Laurie Johnson gave a stand out performance as Alice, lighting up the stage with his charisma and fantastic dance moves.

Swale Community Manager and Director of the show, Jaime Giddings, said: ‘The guys have worked extremely hard on this year’s performance of ‘Bonkers’. The choreography was outstanding and the guys learnt team work, discipline and following instructions. The artwork was created and designed by the art group and the music played and sung by the music group. Another rewarding production.’

The show raised a total of £128 through ticket sales and a raffle on the night. The funds will be allocated to East Kent Mencap’s Swale resource centre for their next production.
