City Council leads the way in eco-friendly driving

Chelmsford City Council is leading the way in promoting more eco-friendly driving by taking out a four-year lease on a new, more environmentally-friendly petrol/plug-in electric BMW 7-Series hybrid to replace the thirteen year old diesel Jaguar, which is used by the Mayor and Deputy Mayor to attend official engagements.

The Mayor of Chelmsford, Councillor Yvonne Spence, is pleased with the new eco-friendly vehicle, commenting “We wanted to make sure the civic car was consistent with the Council’s commitment to improving air quality. This car represents the cutting edge of fuel-efficient technology and will massively reduce carbon emissions generated by Mayor’s engagements – on average more than 300 local journeys every year.”

Being a hybrid means the car will use a combination of electricity stored in batteries and petrol stored in a tank. This will massively reduce the amount of fuel used by the Mayoral party and enable the vehicle to be driven without emitting any pollution on those shorter journeys to local civic engagements.

She added “We hope to inspire other drivers to look for greener modes of transport and to make use of the city’s growing supply of electric vehicle charging points.”

As part of its strategy to support electric vehicles in the city, Chelmsford City Council is in the process of installing six electric vehicle charging points in three Council-run car parks within the city centre. This is in addition to the four electric vehicle charging points already in the city – located at Sandon and Chelmer Valley Park & Ride.

The Council’s commitment to making sure people can charge their electric cars is also included in the emerging Local Plan. All new buildings, whether they are houses or non-residential buildings, will be required to provide access to electric vehicle charging points, to encourage the use of ultra-low emission vehicles. This is part of the Council’s integrated approach to tackling climate change.
