A bit about Church Crookham

Church Crookham is a large suburban village and civil parish in Hampshire, with a population of 11,002 (2021 Census).

Contiguous with the town of Fleet, Crookham dates back as far as the Domesday Book, originally a hamlet until the first and only Anglican Church was built in 1840. Crookham was made its own church parish in 1842. In the centre west of Church Crookham is the Anglican Church that continues to serve both the suburb and the older Crookham Village.

Crookham Village Centre has evolved around scattered ancient cottages, many of which are timber framed. Agriculture and horticulture are important industries, and hops were grown and kiln-dried in the parish until 1974.

The village was formerly noted for brick making and potteries which produced coarse red ware of the flower-pot-type.

Church Crookham hosted Britain’s only commercially successful tobacco plantation, which produces among other brands Blue Pryor cigarettes and pipe tobacco. The whole process of growing and manufacturing ended in 1938. In the 1950s, a BBC film was made entitled Tobacco Road, featuring the Redfields site where tobacco was grown and cured. The site is now Redfields Garden Centre.

There are several schools in the local area including Church Crookham Junior School, Crookham C of E Aided Infant School, Tweseldown Infant School, Calthorpe Park Secondary School and, the independent all-through day school for girls and boys, St Nicholas’.

Local race course Tweseldown is a horse racing track which was used for the eventing steeplechase in the 1948 London Olympics. Crookham Rovers is one of the oldest and largest junior football clubs in Fleet. The club celebrated their 50^th anniversary in 2022 and continues to provide a platform for over 300 boys and girls to enjoy football.

The village has hosted scenes for many films including the 2002 James Bond movie Die Another Day. The woodland and ground between the village and Aldershot were used to represent the demilitarised zone between North and South Korea. Parts of the 2006 dystopian thriller film Children of Men were also shot in Church Crookham. The English poet John Keble was a regular visitor to Church Crookham’s Christ Church.

Every Boxing Day, a traditional Mummers play is performed outside two of the public houses and on the village green.
