Could You Be Canterbury Cathedral’s Next Chorister?

Canterbury Cathedral’s world-famous Boys’ Choir is seeking talented youngsters to join its ranks of chorister.

Boys in School Years 2 and 3 with a passion for singing are sought to join the choir in Year 4. The choir perform at the historic cathedral six times per week, and also take part in a wide range of additional activities, including TV and radio broadcasts, studio recordings, and international tours.

Pupils from any school can apply, and no previous singing experience is necessary as professional vocal coaching will be given to the four boys selected by audition to become choristers this year.

Those who are successful will join the Cathedral’s existing boy choristers as residents at Choir House – an ancient and beautiful building located immediately next to the Cathedral – and will attend the prestigious St Edmund’s School in Canterbury, where they will enjoy an excellent and fulfilling academic, musical, and all-round education, supported by scholarships provided by the Cathedral.

The Cathedral and St Edmund’s are keen to attract interest from a diverse range of boys, particularly those who may never have considered becoming a chorister before or who worry that they don’t have the financial means to benefit from this unique opportunity.

David Newsholme, Acting Director of Music at Canterbury Cathedral, said: “Choristers have the opportunity to make music to the highest professional standards, to develop their skills in the most beautiful setting and to engage in a life that is intellectually and emotionally fulfilling; above all, they make friendships which last a lifetime.”

“There are so many benefits to becoming a Cathedral Chorister. What other opportunities would children have to perform at a truly world-class standard, in one of the most inspiring buildings in the world?” said Andrew De Silva, Head of the Junior School, St Edmund’s. “Choristers are unique, and their skill as trained singers is not dependent on them coming from a particular family background, cultural heritage, religious or non-religious household. Canterbury Choristers are defined by their desire to be involved in something unique, something which will not only inspire themselves, but others. Just think about the wonderful opportunity your child could have.”

Anyone interested in this exciting chance to become a Canterbury Cathedral Chorister and St. Edmund’s pupil is encouraged to attend the ‘Be a Chorister’ virtual event, held online at 10.30am on Saturday 27th March 2021.

Registration for the event closes on 19th March. Sign up and find out more at https://www.canterbury-cathedral.org/choir
