Canenco start journey towards better bin collections

Canenco

A new era for bin collections and street cleaning is underway today (Monday 1 February) as crews from the Canterbury City Council-owned Canterbury Environment Company (Canenco) hit the road.

The change brings our contract on these services with Serco to an end. Existing local staff from the company have transferred to Canenco. Residents should put their bins out in the same way and on the same day as before.

One of the first improvements sees separate vehicles collecting food waste each week. This will allow the garden waste service to be run more effectively when it restarts in March.

Vehicles have been hired for the start of the new bin collections arrangements and new vehicles, which can be adapted if we ever have to change the way we collect waste, will arrive in the summer.

Canenco has assumed responsibility for the depot on Cotton Road in Wincheap as well as the satellite sites on the coast. Serco will continue to run our grounds maintenance contract until December 2022.

There’s much more detail on the birth of Canenco on our newsroom.

Also, an update today on Christmas tree collections. Contrary to some rumours online, these have not been cancelled this year. They remain on hold for now due to Covid-related staffing shortages. We will update again on this page when the situation changes.
