A bit about Bagshot and Lightwater

Bagshot is a large village in the Surrey Heath borough of Surrey, with a population of 5, 932 (2021 Census).

In Elizabethan times, Bagshot prospered due to its location on the main London the West Country road (now known as the A30). Bagshot developed services, inns and fresh horses for passengers and coaches.

Bagshot has four churches; Church of England (St. Anne’s), Roman Catholic (Christ the King); Methodist, Evangelical (Brook Church).

Some of the best mountain biking routes in South East England are in Swinley Forest which borders Bagshot to the north. There are many off-road single trails available in addition to plenty of fire roads. Swinley Woods was considered as a venue for the mountain biking event of the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Bagshot FC was established in 1906 and had a very successful spell in the 80s’ winning successive promotions and reaching the Surrey County Cup semi-finals in 1985 and 1986. More recently, the club has won the Senior Division Championship 4 seasons in a row (2011/12 -2015/16), the Senior Division Cup twice (2012/13, 2013/14) and the Surrey Intermediate Cup (2011/12).

Notable residents of Bagshot include the lead guitarist and backing vocalist of Queen Sir Brian May. May has his own guitar show in the village Brian May Guitars. English naturalist and television presenter Steve Backshall was born in Bagshot and former actress Moiya Ann Kelly, who played Matha Cratchit in Scrooge, lived in Bagshot.

Lightwater is a village 1.8 miles east of Bagshot, with a population of 6, 500 (2021 Census).

The region has been inhabited since pre-historic times with barrows in the heathland south of the village.

The village has full medical facilities, a library, pub, post office and many shops.

Lightwater has its own country park complete with a nature trail, leisure centre and visitors centre. High Curley is the view point from the park which at its highest point is 423 feet.

The local senior rugby club is Lightwater Rugby Club and Swifts is the largest local junior badminton club, accredited as a Premier Club by Badminton England, based at Lightwater Leisure Centre.
